How OpenedMic Works

OpenedMic is a browser-based live audio platform. The broadcaster opens a room from any browser — no installation, no account. Listeners join instantly by scanning a QR code or clicking a link. The entire session happens in the browser, peer-to-peer.

Three Steps

1
Open a Room
Go to openedmic.app in any browser. Enter your name, choose a broadcast mode — Lecture, Tour, Ceremony, Podcast, or others — and your room is created instantly. No account needed.
2
Share the QR or Link
A QR code and join link are generated automatically. Display the QR on screen, share the link by message, or use the built-in share action. Listeners join from any browser on any device.
3
Go Live
Press MIC ON. Your audio is processed in real time and delivered to all listeners simultaneously. You can add camera, screen share, or media playback at any point during the broadcast.

Two Roles

BROADCASTER
  • Opens the room from openedmic.app
  • Controls audio, video, and media sources
  • Shares QR code or link with the audience
  • Can enable or disable group chat
  • Can kick or block disruptive listeners
  • Can record locally to their device
LISTENER
  • Scans a QR code or opens the join link
  • Joins from any browser — no app required
  • Hears processed audio in real time
  • Can use their own headphones or speaker
  • Can send emoji reactions
  • Can participate in chat if enabled

Audio Processing

OpenedMic processes audio in the browser using the Web Audio API before it is transmitted. Every broadcast mode applies a tailored signal chain: high-pass and low-pass filters, a 3-band EQ, compression, noise gate, and gain control. The result is clearer audio for the audience regardless of what microphone the broadcaster is using.

Available broadcast modes include: Lecture (voice clarity, strong noise gate), Outdoor Tour (wind rejection, heavy gate), Music / DJ (full-range, no gate), Ceremony (intimate, light processing), Podcast (studio-grade EQ), Multi-Speaker (full-range stereo), and Custom (manual slider control over all parameters).

Media Transport

Audio and video travel directly between the broadcaster and listeners using WebRTC — a peer-to-peer protocol built into all modern browsers. When a direct path is not available due to network configuration, the connection falls back through an encrypted TURN relay. No audio or video is stored on any server.

What You Need

Broadcaster: Any modern browser with microphone access. Works on desktop, laptop, iPhone (Safari), and Android (Chrome). No installation needed.

Listeners: Any browser on any device. Scan the QR code or open the link. No app, no account, no sign-up. Up to 200 listeners per room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do listeners need to install anything?
No. Listeners open a link or scan a QR code in any modern browser. No app download, no account, and no sign-up are required at any step.
What does the broadcaster need?
A modern browser and a microphone. Open openedmic.app, enter a name, choose a broadcast mode, and press MIC ON. The room is live in under 10 seconds.
How many people can listen at the same time?
Up to 200 listeners can join a single room simultaneously. Rooms are created and destroyed per session — they do not persist after the broadcast ends.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. OpenedMic works in Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android for both broadcasters and listeners. No installation is required on either platform.
Is there a recording feature?
Yes. Broadcasters can record their session locally to their device using the built-in recording control. Recordings are saved as a WebM file on the broadcaster's own device. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
