How OpenedMic Works
OpenedMic is a browser-based live audio platform. The broadcaster opens a room from any browser — no installation, no account. Listeners join by scanning a QR code or clicking a link. The entire session happens in the browser, peer-to-peer.
Three Steps
Two Roles
- Opens the room from openedmic.com/app
- Controls audio, video, and media sources
- Shares QR code or link with the audience
- Can enable or disable group chat
- Can kick or block disruptive listeners
- Can record locally to their device
- Scans a QR code or opens the join link
- Joins from any browser — no app required
- Hears processed audio in real time
- Can use their own headphones or speaker
- Can send emoji reactions
- Can participate in chat if enabled
Listeners receive only by default. A listener may request the Approved Guest Mic — one at a time — and the broadcaster decides whether to approve. Listeners cannot enable a camera or share their screen. OpenedMic is a controlled live broadcast, not an open meeting or video-call tool.
Approved Guest Mic
One listener at a time may request to speak by tapping Ask to speak. The broadcaster sees the request with the listener's name and avatar, and chooses Approve or Deny. After approval, the listener's browser asks for microphone permission. Once permission is granted and the audio path is ready, the guest is live and the broadcaster's mix includes the guest's voice. All other listeners hear the approved guest as part of the broadcast.
The broadcaster keeps full control of the room: a guest volume slider, a mute/unmute toggle, and an End Guest button. The broadcaster's own voice always takes priority. A built-in ducker briefly lowers the guest's level whenever the broadcaster speaks, then restores it. The guest mic is not an open conference call; it is controlled live participation, suitable for a question, a remark, a brief blessing, or a panel response.
What you need as a guest: any modern browser with microphone access, served over HTTPS so the browser can grant microphone permission on mobile. No account, no app install, no registration.
Audio Processing
OpenedMic processes audio in the browser using the Web Audio API before it is transmitted. Every broadcast mode applies a tailored signal chain: high-pass and low-pass filters, a 3-band EQ, compression, noise gate, and gain control. The result is clearer audio for the audience regardless of what microphone the broadcaster is using.
Available broadcast modes include: Lecture (voice clarity, strong noise gate), Outdoor Tour (wind rejection, heavy gate), Music / DJ (full-range, no gate), Ceremony (intimate, light processing), Podcast (studio-grade EQ), Multi-Speaker (full-range stereo), and Custom (manual slider control over all parameters).
Media Transport
Audio and video travel directly between the broadcaster and listeners using WebRTC — a peer-to-peer protocol built into all modern browsers. When a direct path is not available due to network configuration, the connection falls back through an encrypted TURN relay. No audio or video is stored on any server.
