The Problem It Solves

In large lecture halls, outdoor lessons, or noisy environments, a single room sound system may not serve every seat equally. Asking students to install a specific app also adds work before the class can begin. OpenedMic provides a separate browser-based listening path from the instructor to connected students.

This additional path may help students who want independent volume control or who are seated farther from the instructor. It is not a substitute for a required assistive listening system or other accessibility accommodation.

How Instructors Use It

Open openedmic.com/app in a supported browser.
Enter your name and select Lecture mode. This preset uses voice-focused filtering, gating, and compression.
Display the QR code on the projector or share the room link by message.
Press MIC ON. Connected students can begin listening.

There is no OpenedMic account or native app to provision. Room creation and connection time still depend on the browser, permissions, device, and network.

What Lecture Mode Does

The Lecture broadcast mode applies an audio signal chain tuned for spoken voice in indoor environments:

High-pass filter (100Hz): reduces low-frequency rumble, footsteps, and HVAC noise
Noise gate: attenuates the microphone between speech when the signal falls below its threshold
Compression: narrows level differences between softer and louder moments
Preset gain: provides a mode-specific starting level for indoor voice

The Listener Experience

Students scan the QR code or open the link in a supported browser. OpenedMic does not add an app-installation or account-registration step. Playback uses the output selected on each device, with independent volume control.

Students can also send emoji reactions and, if the instructor enables it, participate in text chat. The instructor sees a live listener count and can remove disruptive participants if needed.

Q&A with the Approved Guest Mic. A student can tap Ask to speak in the listener view. The instructor sees the request and decides whether to approve it. After approval and microphone permission, the student's audio is mixed into the live stream. The instructor controls guest volume, mute, and end, and broadcaster speech activates the configured ducking behavior. Only one approved guest can be live at a time.
