Live Audio for Classes and Lectures
OpenedMic lets instructors broadcast live audio directly from a browser — and students listen on their phones without installing anything. One QR code displayed on the projector is enough for an entire class to join in seconds.
The Problem It Solves
In large lecture halls, outdoor lessons, or noisy environments, voice projection is a real challenge. PA systems are expensive or unavailable. Asking students to download a specific app adds friction and time. OpenedMic removes both problems: the instructor uses their browser as a live microphone, and students listen through their own earphones directly from the browser.
This also benefits students who are hard of hearing, non-native speakers who benefit from clear audio close to their ear, or those seated far from the speaker.
How Instructors Use It
- Open openedmic.app in any browser.
- Enter your name and select Lecture mode — optimized for voice clarity and noise suppression.
- Display the QR code on the projector or share the room link by message.
- Press MIC ON. Students are listening in real time.
The entire setup takes under 30 seconds. No IT support needed, no accounts to manage, no app policy to navigate.
What Lecture Mode Does
The Lecture broadcast mode applies a purpose-built audio signal chain tuned for spoken voice in indoor environments:
- High-pass filter (100Hz) — removes low-frequency rumble, footsteps, and HVAC noise
- Noise gate — silences the microphone between speech, so ambient classroom noise does not continuously reach listeners
- Compression — balances level so softer and louder moments reach listeners at a consistent volume
- Gain optimization — mode-specific gain pre-set for indoor voice
The Listener Experience
Students scan the QR code or tap the link. Their browser opens the session immediately. No prompts, no installs, no sign-up form. They hear the instructor through their own earphones. Volume is controlled independently on each device.
Students can also send emoji reactions and, if the instructor enables it, participate in text chat. The instructor sees a live listener count and can remove disruptive participants if needed.
